Starting Over with Courage + Curiosity
Since it is the beginning of a new year, I thought this was the perfect time to share with you my thoughts on starting over and facing new challenges. As the daughter of a military officer, I experienced frequent moves throughout my childhood, which meant constant adaptation to new environments, new schools, new friends, new activities. This instilled in me the understanding that starting something new is hard – be it a new job, a new school, or learning a new skill. However, I also learned that starting over takes strength, bravery, and the willingness to embrace the beginner's mind.
Two years ago, I made the decision to leave behind the corporate lifestyle that no longer aligned with my true desires. I longed to reconnect with my creative roots and decided to start afresh in every aspect of my life. Initially, that nagging little voice in my head tried to convince me that I was too old to embark on new ventures. But the stubborn person I am, I ignored that little voice and jumped in feet first. In March 2023 enrolled in Bonnie Christine’s Immersion program and learned Adobe Illustrator and have since taught myself PhotoShop and InDesign. I have also been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to re-ignite by childhood passion for the equestrian life and purchased my first horse in 2022. I am now training to learn the complex discipline of Dressage riding. Every day is a new opportunity to challenge myself and get out of my comfort zone.
Grateful Everyday
Everyday I feel blessed to spend time in my light-filled studio
Reflecting on my own journey of starting something new later in life, I have been profoundly inspired by the stories of others who have embarked on similar paths.
Let's begin close to home, with my mother. Throughout her life, she has continuously explored new artistic endeavors with grace and style. From studying Chinese painting with a master in Hong Kong to having her first one-woman show and illustrating children's books in her fifties, she has always embraced the joy of reinvention. Now in her early eighties and battling macular degeneration, she is studying abstract painting with British painter Louise Fletcher (@LouiseFletcher) and she is happily back in her studio, painting and exploring new artistic mediums.
Another remarkable story that recently captivated my attention is that of Diana Nyad, the long-distance open water swimmer who conquered the 100-mile journey from Cuba to Florida at the age of 64. A feat she initially tried at 28 and failed. Despite facing numerous obstacles and being told she was too old, Nyad's unwavering belief in herself led to her eventual triumph. Her inspiring tale reminds us that age should never be a barrier to achieving incredible things. If you haven’t had the opportunity to watch the Netflix film, give it a go – I enjoyed it.
Let’s talk a little about Martha Stewart. When we think of Martha Stewart, we may have varying opinions about her, but her journey is undeniably inspiring. Stewart didn't start her company until she was fifty, facing her own set of challenges and roadblocks along the way. Yet, she transformed homemaking and crafting, making them cool and hip. Even in her eighties, she continues to evolve and remain relevant, showcasing the power of embracing new beginnings at any age.
There are countless stories out there of inspiring women of all ages who have triumphed against the odds. These stories bring us hope that we too and accomplish great things at any age.
Embracing the Beginner's Mind:
As I was thinking about my own recent journey with starting over, I stumbled on the concept of the "Beginner's Mind." I thought, “WOW! This is my life right now, I am a beginner at everything!” The concept of the beginner’s mind is the Zen Buddhist philosophy that encourages us to approach every situation with a fresh perspective, free from preconceived notions and judgments. When we adopt the beginner's mindset, we allow ourselves to be open to new possibilities, to learn from our mistakes, and to approach challenges with curiosity and humility. I have come to recognize this idea of embracing a beginner’s mind in my creative friends. We have a shared passion for learning from our fellow artists, taking chances and being open to new ideas. Beginning again and challenging ourselves everyday becomes a joy not a trial.
And if you need more proof that you’re not too old to start something new; science has proven that learning a new skill improves your brain health and memory. Learning later in life is a way to protect the brain against ageing and promotes ‘neuroplasticity’, the brains ability to develop new neural pathways. Learning new skills also helps you gain new perspective on the world around you and helps you better handle challenges that life throws our way. I do not subscribe to new year’s resolutions; I am more about goals and trying challenging myself with new experiences. For me, 2024 will be focused on getting my home business off the ground and competing in more equestrian competitions.
How will you challenge yourself this year? How will you get out of your comfort zone? What new skill will you learn, or project will you finally tackle? What passion will you reignite? I would love to hear what your goals are for 2024 and if this post has inspired you to try new things this year. Please email me at kari@karimariedesign.com
